One important item has been missing in Pinellas County for those diagnosed with a brain tumor, support. This key missing component was resolved yesterday during a meeting between Miles for Hope, a local nonprofit organization, and Mease Dunedin Hospital met to find a solution.
Miles for Hope will be hosting a monthly support group at Mease Dunedin Hospital starting on July 30, 2009. The support group will meet on the last Thursday of each month, and will provide a very critical component to those diagnosed with a brain tumor. “Support and hope are both key components to the healing and recovery process, and this relationship between our organization and Mease Dunedin will provide a community service by supporting both the patient and caregivers through a very difficult diagnosis.”, said Robert Gibbs, who knows first hand how difficult dealing with a brain tumor is.
Gibbs was diagnosed back in May 2004 right at Mease Dunedin, and is now a five year survivor thanks to support he received and hope that he holds on to. “The lack of available support, information and funding of research for brain tumors led my wife and I to create Miles for Hope. Within Miles for Hope, you will find that we offer an online support forum with information, clinical trial information, breaking news, survivor stories, a biweekly radio show called “Brain Tumor Talk Radio”, and the formation of the first and only online social network community for those touched by a brain tumor. We refuse to let others be left to seek information and support on their own like we were, they shouldn’t have to”.
Mease Dunedin Hospital has recently become the primary neurologic facility within the Baycare Health System. “This relationship with Miles for Hope and Mease coincides with our mission of advancing superior healthcare “, stated Beth Hardey, Public Relations Manager with Mease Dunedin. “Healthcare does not stop with diagnosis and treatment, it encompasses everything related to a patient including support, exercise and nutrition”.
